Truly hardy

My sanity is often questioned when my colleagues found out that I occasionally walk to KLCC for lunch or errands in the hot sun instead of taking the train. I could’ve easily borrowed a season pass from a colleague for the 1-stop ride I guess, but I’ve always been the walker. Other than walking being the most logical and natural thing for me to get to somewhere reasonably close by, I’ve no other reasons for choosing to walk. Sure I’d be soaked in sweat and my Sledgers aren’t exactly <insert running shoes of choice>, walking still seems faster for me. I needn’t wait for the train and with my walking pace, I’ll reach the destination within 12 minutes tops.

I’ve even walked home from school several times during my early teens. If you’re acquainted with Penang, my dear old school was the Penang Free School (est. 1816) located along the busy Green Lane or Jalan Mesjid Negeri as it’s known today, and I stayed close to where the New World Park food and entertainment center stands now (check out this foodie’s blog, and I’m salivating over this). With the school bag and unseasoned legs, that was quite a distance. But I was young and had plenty of angst, and besides it was quite an adventure discovering new shortcuts along the way. Of course my Mom never told Dad about my exploits or it would’ve been the cane for me – youngsters never had a sense of safety you see. But traffic was much lighter then and the world a safer place too.

I find it hard to walk slow. I’m usually ahead of my lunch partners when heading out for a bite. I slow down only when out and about with the family or towards the last few hours of a 12-hour walk event. I’m definitely no machine and there’s a limit to the walking I’m willing to do though. I don’t climb the 15 floors to my office prefering the lift. And I don’t think I’m crazy enough to sign up for the 24-hour Walk.

I used to walk to KLCC as well when I was still working around that area…yeah, most of my colleagues (the younger ones!!) would rather take the train :P

Citibank and KLCC are a walking distance apart, why would they want to take a train ride? the walk is shaded by trees, so it’s not that hot. unless it’s sweltering humid season. still, i’ve never imagined anybody would take a train instead of walking

I still remember that I’d walk to my uni and the distance is around 4K+ through and fro. That would be an everyday walk although was all the time breathless (maybe the cold air). I’d even walk close to 5K to a market just to get my supplies and I’d be carrying kg’s worth of things on the way back. I guess in Malaysia it was all different being that the weather is ‘warm’ and usually people would not like to get themselves soaked but sometimes I do question their sanity in parking lots when everybody is vying for the space closest to the exit! I mean walking just a little would not kill them right?

Hard to change the mindset. Perhaps comes with the times where ease of use is misinterpreted. The must still be some honest physical toiling, if you can call walking 1.3K to KLCC “toiling”.

    Whoa….HDR?

RWM: Nope. Boosted the tonal contrast, desaturate the background, dodge & burned some areas. oh yeah and a little sharpening :)
